What the research says: Massage therapy has reasonable evidence for providing short term relief of musculoskeletal pain, including low back and neck pain, particularly when it is part of a broader plan that includes movement and exercise. We are honest about this, deep tissue massage is an excellent tool for relief and comfort, and it works best alongside good movement habits rather than in isolation.
Firm, But Never Just Painful
Deep tissue work should feel firm and effective. You may notice a satisfying sense of release, and some areas can feel tender as they let go. What it should never be is a case of gritting your teeth and enduring it. Good communication matters, so we check in on pressure and work with your comfort, not against it. Tensing up against too much pressure is counterproductive, so we find the level where your body can actually let go.
Afterwards
A little tenderness for a day or two after a deeper treatment is normal, much like the feeling after a good workout. Drinking plenty of water, keeping gently active, and doing any stretches we suggest all help you get the most from your session and settle any post treatment soreness.
Carrying tension that just will not release? Our Surrey Hills clinic is a short drive from Box Hill. Book a deep tissue massage and let us work into the areas that need it most.
Deep tissue massage is not the best choice for every person or every situation, and that is completely fine. Let us know your history at your visit and we will adjust the treatment or suggest a gentler option that suits you better.
Before your treatment, let your therapist know if you have a recent injury, are pregnant, bruise easily, or have a medical condition such as a clotting disorder. This helps us adapt the treatment safely to your needs.
Deep tissue massage is not suitable for everyone at every stage of recovery. Your therapist will consider your symptoms, health history and treatment goals before deciding how much pressure is appropriate.
If firm pressure is uncomfortable or unsuitable, other approaches may be more appropriate. Remedial massage, myotherapy or lymphatic techniques can provide gentler options depending on your individual needs.
Severe pain following an injury, particularly when accompanied by significant swelling, numbness or weakness, should be assessed by a doctor before having deep tissue massage.
Not every pain or injury should be treated with deep pressure. If your symptoms suggest that further medical assessment is needed, we will recommend the appropriate next step rather than proceeding with unsuitable treatment.
Our goal is to provide the treatment your body actually needs- not simply the most intensive technique. If deep tissue massage is not the right choice for you at that time, we will explain your options and help you choose a more suitable approach.
