What is Knee Pain?

Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions among adults and athletes who either run or play sports that involve jumping or agility. Essentially knee pain describes pain that is felt inside and or around the knee that cause discomfort especially when walking upstairs or when bending and straightening the knee. Knee pain can happen suddenly (acute) or develop overtime (chronic). Chronic knee pain describes pain that is felt for 12 consecutive weeks or more, which involves constant swelling or sensitivity in one or both knees. An acute knee pain will usually have an identifiable cause as it happens suddenly.

Causes

There are many conditions which cause and or contribute to chronic knee pain. The underlying cause of knee pain is often determined by the symptoms which the individual experiences and through a thorough health assessment. Regardless of the cause, knee pain can be very debilitating and has the potential to have a negative impact on one’s quality of life due to the fact we do use our legs and knees a lot throughout the day.

Conditions that can cause knee pain. These include:

    • Osteoarthritis: Pain, inflammation, and joint destruction caused by degeneration and deterioration of the joint
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): A chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder that causes pain swelling and can lead to joint deformity and bone erosion
    • Meniscus Tear: A rupture in one or more of the cartilages in and around the knee
    • Torn Ligament: There are four ligaments in and around the knee. The Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is most likely to be the injured ligament of the four
    • Tendinitis: Pain in the front of the knee that is made worse when climbing, taking stairs, or walking up an incline
    • Chondromalacia Patella: Damaged cartilage under the kneecap
    • Dislocation: Dislocation of the kneecap
