Medicare at MyoFitness

Medicare Benefits. What is covered and what is not.

MyoFitness accepts Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, previously known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans. Medicare rebates apply to physiotherapy only. Myotherapy, remedial massage, and lymphatic drainage are not eligible, regardless of your GP care plan.

Why this matters: Myotherapy, remedial massage, lymphatic drainage, and other services at MyoFitness are excellent clinical treatments. Medicare simply does not fund them. This is a national Medicare policy, not a MyoFitness policy. It applies at every allied health clinic in Australia. If you have private health extras cover, your myotherapy or remedial massage session may attract a private health rebate, which is entirely separate from Medicare. If you are unsure which service to book before your appointment, call us on 03 9028 4087 and we will clarify this for you.
Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM)

A GP-issued care plan for people with chronic medical conditions.

At MyoFitness, we accept referrals under Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, previously known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans. These plans are issued by your GP for individuals with chronic or complex medical conditions and allow access to a limited number of subsidised allied health sessions each year.

To qualify for a GP care plan, your GP must determine that you have a chronic medical condition that has been, or is expected to be, present for six months or longer. These plans are designed to support long-term management of health conditions through a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.

Common chronic conditions for which GPs issue care plans include musculoskeletal conditions, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Your GP will assess your individual situation and determine your eligibility. Not all chronic conditions automatically qualify, and the decision rests entirely with your GP.

How the Medicare CDM plan works

Step by step, from your GP to your appointment.

Current Medicare rebate per eligible physiotherapy session

$53.80

Correct at time of writing. Applies to physiotherapy sessions only. Up to 5 sessions per calendar year under a valid GP CDM plan. Full payment required at time of service. Sessions expire 31 December each year.

The Medicare CDM program is a valuable pathway for people with chronic conditions to access subsidised allied health care. At MyoFitness, we want every patient to arrive knowing exactly what to expect, so there are no surprises on the day.

The most important thing to understand: the Medicare rebate at MyoFitness applies to physiotherapy sessions only. If you have a GP care plan and want to see a myotherapist or remedial massage therapist, we can absolutely help you. Those sessions will be billed privately in full, and no Medicare rebate will apply.

If you have private health insurance, your myotherapy or remedial massage sessions may attract a private health rebate under your extras cover. This is entirely separate from Medicare. MyoFitness uses HICAPS for on-the-spot private health claiming at all four clinics.

If you are unsure which funding pathway applies before your first appointment, call 03 9028 4087 and our team will help you understand your options clearly before you book.

See your GP and request a CDM care plan

Speak to your GP about whether you are eligible for a Chronic Disease Management plan. Your GP will assess whether your condition meets the criteria of a chronic medical condition expected to be present for six months or longer, and will determine which allied health disciplines are appropriate for your management plan.

Confirm your referral specifies physiotherapy

Your GP care plan must specifically include physiotherapy as the allied health discipline for a Medicare rebate to apply at MyoFitness. A general referral to allied health, or a referral to myotherapy, remedial massage, or lymphatic drainage, will not attract a Medicare rebate even when attached to a CDM plan. Confirm this with your GP before your appointment.

Book a physiotherapy appointment at MyoFitness

Book a physiotherapy appointment specifically, not a myotherapy or remedial massage session. Book online or call 03 9028 4087. Bring your GP referral and Medicare card to your appointment. If you are unsure which service to book, call us first and we will confirm the correct appointment type for your referral before you arrive.

Pay in full on the day, then claim your rebate

All appointments at MyoFitness are privately billed. Full payment is required at the time of your consultation. For eligible physiotherapy appointments, a Medicare rebate of $53.80 per session can be processed immediately via HICAPS if you are using a savings or cheque account. Medicare rebates cannot be processed onto a credit card. If you cannot process on the day, a receipt is provided so you can claim via the Medicare Express Plus app or your Medicare online account.

Track your remaining sessions carefully

Medicare provides rebates for up to five allied health sessions per calendar year under a GP care plan. These sessions are shared across all allied health providers you see under the plan, not just MyoFitness. Sessions do not carry over into the following year and expire on 31 December. A new referral from your GP is required once all sessions are used or when a new calendar year begins.

MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy sessions with a registered physiotherapist at MyoFitness attract a Medicare rebate of $53.80 per session under a valid GP CDM care plan specifying physiotherapy, up to 5 sessions per calendar year. This is the only MyoFitness service eligible for a Medicare rebate.

NOT MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Myotherapy

Myotherapy is not eligible for Medicare rebates at any MyoFitness clinic, regardless of whether you have a GP care plan. Myotherapy sessions are privately billed in full. Private health extras cover may apply depending on your fund and policy level.

NOT MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Remedial Massage

Lymphatic drainage is not eligible for Medicare rebates. Sessions are privately billed in full. NDIS funding may apply for eligible participants where lymphatic drainage is clinically indicated and plan-approved. Private health extras cover may apply depending on your policy.

NOT MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

The most clinically effective approach to sports injury is addressing the precursors before they become injury. Regular sports treatment at MyoFitness identifies accumulating trigger points, muscle imbalances, and movement compensations before they reach the threshold of injury, keeping you training and competing consistently across your season.

NOT MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Sports Treatment

Sports treatment sessions are not eligible for Medicare rebates. Sessions are privately billed. Private health extras cover may apply under remedial massage or myotherapy benefits depending on your fund and policy.

NOT MEDICARE ELIGIBLE

Dry Needling (myotherapy context)

Dry needling performed within a myotherapy session is not eligible for a Medicare rebate. Dry needling performed within an eligible physiotherapy session at MyoFitness may be included within that Medicare-eligible appointment. The service type of the overall appointment determines eligibility, not the technique used.

Who Medicare CDM physiotherapy helps

Chronic conditions where physiotherapy under a CDM plan is clinically relevant

Musculoskeletal conditions

Chronic back pain, neck pain, hip pain, knee pain, osteoarthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions present for six months or longer are among the most common CDM plan presentations for physiotherapy at MyoFitness. Your GP must assess and confirm chronic condition status.

Post-surgical rehabilitation

Physiotherapy following joint replacement, spinal surgery, or other surgical procedures for chronic conditions may be covered under a CDM plan. Physiotherapy must be specified as an appropriate allied health discipline in the plan for the Medicare rebate to apply.

Neurological conditions

Chronic neurological conditions including stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease where physiotherapy forms part of the long-term management plan may be eligible. Eligibility is determined by your GP based on your specific condition and management needs.

Cardiovascular disease

People with chronic cardiovascular conditions where physiotherapy is an appropriate part of management, including cardiac rehabilitation and supervised exercise prescription, may be eligible for a CDM plan. GP assessment and an appropriate physiotherapy referral are required.

Diabetes management

People with Type 2 diabetes may be eligible for a CDM plan that includes physiotherapy for exercise prescription and musculoskeletal management. Exercise programming is a cornerstone of diabetes management, and MyoFitness physiotherapists provide structured, clinically supervised exercise for eligible patients.

Chronic respiratory conditions

Chronic respiratory conditions including asthma and COPD where physiotherapy includes breathing retraining and exercise capacity improvement may be eligible for a CDM plan. Your GP will assess whether physiotherapy is clinically appropriate for your specific respiratory presentation.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Medicare at MyoFitness

No. Medicare rebates at MyoFitness are available for physiotherapy services only. Myotherapy, remedial massage, and lymphatic drainage are not eligible for Medicare rebates under any circumstances, regardless of whether you have a GP Chronic Disease Management care plan. If you book one of these services expecting a Medicare rebate, your appointment will be privately billed in full with no rebate available. This is a national Medicare policy and applies at every allied health clinic in Australia, not just MyoFitness. If you have private health extras cover, a separate private health rebate may apply to these services depending on your fund and policy.

No. All sessions claimed under a GP care plan must be conducted by a physiotherapist. You cannot use Medicare sessions for some appointments and then switch to a myotherapist or remedial massage therapist for subsequent sessions under the same care plan. Each individual session you wish to claim a Medicare rebate for must be a physiotherapy session with a registered physiotherapist. You are absolutely welcome to see both a physiotherapist and a myotherapist at MyoFitness as part of your overall care, but only the physiotherapy sessions will attract a Medicare rebate.

To qualify for a GP Chronic Disease Management plan, your GP must determine that you have a chronic medical condition that has been, or is expected to be, present for six months or longer. Common examples include musculoskeletal conditions, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Your GP will assess your individual situation and determine your eligibility. Not every chronic condition automatically qualifies, and your GP may also need to complete a Team Care Arrangement to include allied health disciplines in your plan.

Under a GP care plan, Medicare provides rebates for up to five allied health sessions per calendar year. These five sessions are shared across all allied health providers you see under the plan, not just MyoFitness. If you use three physiotherapy sessions at MyoFitness and two sessions with a podiatrist elsewhere, all five sessions will have been used for that calendar year. Sessions expire on 31 December and do not carry over into the following year. A new referral from your GP is required once all sessions are used or when a new calendar year begins.

No. Unused Medicare CDM sessions expire on 31 December each year and do not carry over into the following year. A new referral from your GP is required at the start of each new calendar year if you wish to continue claiming Medicare rebates for physiotherapy at MyoFitness. Plan your appointments with this in mind to make use of your available sessions before they expire.

Yes. All appointments at MyoFitness are privately billed and full payment is required at the time of your consultation. For eligible physiotherapy appointments, the Medicare rebate of $53.80 is then processed after payment via HICAPS if you are using a savings or cheque account linked to your EFTPOS card. Medicare rebates cannot be processed onto a credit card. If you are unable to process the rebate on the day, a receipt will be provided so you can claim directly via the Medicare Express Plus app or through your Medicare online account.

Yes, for eligible physiotherapy sessions, the Medicare rebate can be processed immediately via HICAPS at all MyoFitness clinics, provided you are paying with a savings or cheque account linked to your EFTPOS card. Medicare rebates cannot be processed onto a credit card at the clinic. If you do not have a savings or cheque account available, we will provide you with a receipt to claim through the Medicare Express Plus app or your Medicare online account at your convenience.

If you book a myotherapy, remedial massage, lymphatic drainage, or other non-physiotherapy service and expect a Medicare rebate, the appointment will be privately billed in full on the day with no Medicare rebate available. It is the patient’s responsibility to ensure they are booking the correct service type before their appointment. If you are unsure, call 03 9028 4087 before booking and our team will confirm the correct appointment type for your referral. We would much rather clarify on the phone than have you arrive expecting a rebate that cannot be applied.

Yes, you can book a longer physiotherapy session at MyoFitness. However, the Medicare rebate amount remains fixed at $53.80 per session regardless of the duration of the appointment. Any session fee above the rebate amount is an out-of-pocket cost. A longer session does not attract a higher Medicare rebate.

Yes. Many clients at MyoFitness see both a physiotherapist and a myotherapist as part of their overall care. The physiotherapy sessions may attract a Medicare rebate under your CDM plan. The myotherapy sessions will be privately billed in full, and your private health extras cover may apply separately for those sessions if you have appropriate myotherapy cover. The two disciplines complement each other well, and your MyoFitness practitioners will coordinate your care where appropriate.

Medicare CDM for physiotherapy. Private billing for everything else.

Physiotherapy sessions under a valid Medicare CDM care plan are available at all four MyoFitness clinics. Myotherapy, remedial massage, and lymphatic drainage are privately billed in full. Call us before you book if you are unsure which service applies to your referral.
