Myotherapy Melbourne — MyoFitness

Musculoskeletal therapy that finds the cause and treats it.

Myotherapy is a clinical, evidence-based discipline focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. At Myofitness, every session begins with a thorough assessment of what is driving your condition before any treatment begins, then builds a plan around resolving it.

Clinical

Myotherapy at Myofitness is not a general wellness service. It is a targeted clinical treatment delivered by highly trained therapists with a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, pathophysiology, and pain science.Skilled assessment and management of the upper cervical spine in cervicogenic and primary headache.

What myotherapy actually is

Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management. In that order. Every time.

Myotherapy involves the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal conditions. Myotherapists are trained to identify the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction through detailed clinical history-taking, movement analysis, postural assessment, palpation, and neurological screening where indicated.

Treatment addresses the specific structures identified in the assessment, using a range of manual therapy techniques, dry needling, and exercise-based interventions. Management extends beyond the treatment session, providing the client with corrective exercises, postural guidance, and a clear understanding of what is driving their condition and how to reduce recurrence.

Myotherapy is not a relaxation service. It is a clinical intervention delivered by degree-qualified practitioners with a four-year university education in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and evidence-based treatment. This level of clinical training is what distinguishes myotherapy from standard massage and allows it to be applied effectively to complex, chronic, and recurrent musculoskeletal conditions.

At Myofitness, myotherapy is also integrated with physiotherapy, psychology, and lymphatic therapy where presentations require a multidisciplinary approach. Referral networks are maintained across all relevant allied health and medical disciplines so that clients receive the right care at every stage of their recovery.

Techniques used in myotherapy at Myofitness

Every technique selected based on assessment findings
at Myofitness

Deep Tissue Massage

Sustained, targeted pressure into deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to address chronic tension, adhesions, and postural holding patterns that surface-level work cannot reach.

Trigger point therapy

Precise sustained pressure applied to hyperirritable spots within muscle tissue that refer pain to predictable, often distant locations. Resolving the trigger point at its source resolves the referred pattern.

Dry needling

Sterile single-use needles inserted into trigger points and dysfunctional muscle tissue to produce a twitch response, release muscular tension, and address pain patterns that manual pressure cannot fully reach.

Myofascial release

Slow, sustained pressure applied to the fascial system — the connective tissue surrounding every muscle and organ — to release global holding patterns and restrictions that muscular treatment alone cannot resolve.

Joint mobilisation

Passive movement applied through specific joint ranges to restore normal joint mechanics, reduce stiffness, and improve the afferent signalling that tells the brain the joint is safe to move through its full range.

Cupping therapy

Negative-pressure cups applied to the skin to create a lifting and decompressive effect on underlying tissue, separating fascial adhesions and drawing blood flow to chronically tight muscle groups.

Corrective exercise

Targeted exercise prescribed to address the biomechanical patterns sustaining a condition, rebuild muscle capacity, improve movement quality, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence between sessions.

Neurodynamic techniques

Specific movements that assess and treat the mechanical behaviour of peripheral nerves, used when neural involvement is contributing to symptoms that standard soft tissue treatment is not resolving.

Postural and ergonomic assessment

Identification of the sustained loading patterns — at work, at a screen, during sport, or in sleep — that are contributing to tissue stress and pain, with practical strategies to modify them.

The Myofitness approach to recovery

Three steps that guide every myotherapy presentation
at Myofitness

01

Explain your diagnosis clearly

If you understand what is causing your pain, that gives you power over it. The helplessness of not knowing the source of pain is itself a significant driver of chronic pain, stress, and reduced quality of life. Clarity is clinical.

02

Build your roadmap to recovery

How many sessions you will need, which corrective exercises apply, how often you need to complete them, and what the realistic milestones are. Hands-on myotherapy and corrective exercise together produce faster, more durable results than either alone.

03

Refer when further investigation is needed

If your condition requires further investigation or falls outside the scope of what myotherapy can address, we refer you to a trusted professional from our extensive allied health and medical network — not because we cannot help, but because you deserve the right care.

Managing pain, whether acute or chronic, requires more than a good technique applied to the right area. It requires a clear clinical framework that takes the client from confusion about their condition to confidence in their recovery. At Myofitness, every myotherapy presentation is guided by three steps that apply regardless of the complexity of the condition.

The first step, explaining the diagnosis clearly, is often underestimated in its clinical value. Research consistently shows that people who understand what is causing their pain report lower pain intensity, higher function, and better engagement with treatment than those who do not. Understanding your pain takes away some of its power over you. That is not a philosophical claim. It is a measurable, well-evidenced clinical phenomenon.

The second and third steps build on this foundation. A clear roadmap to recovery gives the client realistic expectations and a defined role in their own treatment. And where referral is needed, Myofitness maintains an extensive network of high-quality allied health and medical professionals to ensure continuity of care at every stage.

Pain is multifactorial. It involves structural damage or dysfunction, neurological sensitisation, psychological contributions, biomechanical loading patterns, lifestyle factors, and the quality of sensory information reaching the brain. Treating only one dimension of this picture produces partial results. The Myofitness approach incorporates all of them.

Our practitioners bring a thorough procedure involving assessment, diagnosis, and management of persistent pain. This approach allows a greater understanding of each client and their individual needs, so that an individualised treatment plan can be built to eliminate pain, re-establish full soft tissue function, and accelerate recovery.

At Myofitness, the goal is never simply to make you feel better in the session. It is to change what is driving your condition so that the improvement holds. That requires clinical accuracy from the very first appointment, and it is the standard we hold ourselves to across all three of our Melbourne clinics.

Where a presentation requires input from physiotherapy, psychology, lymphatic therapy, or another discipline, Myofitness practitioners coordinate care and refer within our clinical team or external network. This integrated approach is what complex and chronic conditions require, and it is what distinguishes Myofitness from a general myotherapy or massage clinic.

Does this sound like you?

Real presentations. Clear answers. A plan that actually addresses the cause.

Pain that keeps coming back

Treatment eases it for a few days and it returns. This pattern means the underlying driver has not been identified or addressed. Myotherapy assessment finds what is sustaining the recurrence and builds a plan that targets it specifically.

Neck and shoulder tension that never releases

Tension that accumulates through the week regardless of how much you stretch is a structural pattern, not simply a stress response. Myotherapy identifies the muscles that are overloaded and why, then addresses the cause rather than the accumulation.

Back pain affecting sleep, work, or movement

Whether it is morning stiffness, radiating leg symptoms, or a pattern that has been present for so long it has become background noise, lower back pain has a structural and biomechanical driver. Myotherapy identifies it and treats it at the source.

Headaches with a neck component

Head pain that builds through the day, worsens at a screen, or eases when lying down often has a cervical muscular or fascial driver. Myotherapy treats the structures in the upper neck and shoulder girdle contributing to the headache pattern directly.

A sports injury that will not fully resolve

Soft tissue injuries that plateau or recur at the same site usually mean the biomechanical pattern producing the injury was never corrected. Myotherapy identifies the pattern and builds a recovery program that corrects it, not just rehabilitates around it.

Chronic pain that has been labelled but not resolved

Diagnoses like fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain describe a state, not a cause. Myotherapy applies modern pain science alongside manual therapy to address the neurological and structural contributors that standard treatment has often missed.

What to know before you book

Myotherapy is a degree-qualified discipline involving the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Myotherapists complete a four-year university degree covering anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and evidence-based treatment. Remedial massage practitioners typically complete a shorter diploma course and focus primarily on hands-on techniques without the same depth of clinical assessment training. Myotherapy includes all the manual therapy techniques of remedial massage but adds a comprehensive clinical assessment framework, neurological testing, dry needling, and evidence-based exercise prescription.

Myotherapy is effective for anyone experiencing musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction, including acute injuries, chronic conditions, sports-related presentations, postural pain, headaches, and nerve-related symptoms. It is particularly valuable for people whose pain has not responded adequately to other treatments, as the comprehensive clinical assessment often identifies contributing factors that previous treatment did not address.

Every initial session begins with a detailed clinical history, followed by postural assessment, movement analysis, palpation of relevant structures, and neurological screening where indicated. Your practitioner then explains what was found and what the treatment plan involves before any hands-on treatment begins. Treatment uses the technique or combination of techniques most appropriate to your assessment findings. At the end of the session, you receive corrective exercises and guidance relevant to your presentation. Follow-up sessions build on what the initial assessment established.

This depends entirely on your presentation. An acute injury responding well may require two to four sessions. A chronic condition that has been present for years typically requires a longer treatment block, usually alongside corrective exercise and lifestyle modifications. At your initial assessment, your practitioner will give you a realistic picture of what is achievable and over what timeframe, based on your specific clinical findings rather than a generic package.

Yes. Myotherapy is claimable through most private health extras policies. The specific rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. We use HICAPS at all three clinics for on-the-spot claiming. Medicare rebates are available under a GP Chronic Disease Management plan. TAC and WorkCover cover myotherapy for approved presentations. NDIS funding may apply under capacity building supports. Call us to confirm your specific situation before your first appointment.

No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by phone at any of our three clinics. If you have been referred by a GP, specialist, or another practitioner, bring the referral with you and your myotherapist will incorporate their clinical notes into the assessment.

Yes. Myotherapy is considered safe for the vast majority of people when delivered by a qualified practitioner. Side effects are generally mild and temporary: minor post-treatment soreness in treated areas is common, particularly after dry needling or deep tissue work, and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Your practitioner will discuss any relevant precautions at your initial assessment and adjust technique accordingly where specific considerations apply.

Yes, and for many complex or chronic conditions it should be. Myotherapy at Myofitness integrates well with physiotherapy, psychology, and lymphatic therapy within our own clinical team, and with GP management, specialist care, and other allied health disciplines externally. Where your presentation would benefit from a multidisciplinary approach, your myotherapist will coordinate with other providers and refer where appropriate.
