Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain which develops gradually over time making it a chronic injury due to overuse. There are many factors which contribute to Plantar Fasciitis including
Poor gait (walking pattern)
Standing up and walking around for a long period of time
Being flat-footed or having high arches
Plantar Fasciitis is often the result of tight calf muscles which are the Gastrocnemius and Soleus. When these two muscles are tight, they can pull on the Plantar Fascia which closes the space in the heel joint (talocalcaneal joint). This then changes the function of the joint or the gait and gradually puts more pressure on the Plantar Fascia causing pain. Therefore, to treat Plantar Fasciitis these muscles must be assessed and treated to open the joint space to restore appropriate gait and range of motion.
Symptoms:
Dull or sharp pain in the heel of the foot (often in one heel but sometimes both)
Burning ache felt at the bottom of the foot
