What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a neurological disorder that causes intense pain in the lower back, buttock and legs due to irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve originates from the lower back (lumbar spine L4, L5 and S1) and runs deep into the buttocks (sacrum) and travels down to the hamstrings and lower legs. It’s important to note from the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve branches into two separate nerves, known as tibial nerve and the peroneal nerve. Therefore, any pain felt from the back of the knee down is not necessarily associated with the sciatic nerve. However, any compression or irritation along the sciatic nerve can cause pain, tingling, numbness and weakness anywhere along the entire nerve root.

Reasons

There are many potential causes of sciatic nerve pain including lower back disc rupture (lumbar herniated disc) or overgrowth of bone (bone spur) also known as osteophyte in the lumbar spine.

However, sciatic nerve compression often occurs due muscular tightness and dysfunction which stops the nerve from sliding and gliding through the muscles it stimulates. Nerves do not have the ability to stretch but they slide and glide through muscles therefore, any muscular tightness and dysfunction will reduce the nerve function causing pain along the nerve root.

Treatment

It’s important to seek professional treatment to get any neural condition addressed as leaving them untreated can cause permanent nerve damage to the area the nerve stimulates. Not only that, neural pain can be very debilitating as it tends to linger on for a long time until the cause of the problem is addressed.  Our assessment and investigation will tell us exactly what causes your nerve pain. That’s what we do here at Myofitness, we treat to eliminate the cause of the pain and give our clients tailored treatment plans because no two people are the same.
