Most people with migraines have been told it is hormonal, genetic, or stress-related. That may be partly true. But in the majority of migraine and chronic headache cases, the upper cervical spine is sensitising the brainstem and amplifying those triggers into a full attack.
Priyanka attended the Watson Headache® Institute Level 1 Foundation Headache Course titled “Cervicogenic Headache and The Role of C1-C3 Cervical Afferents in Primary Headache” presented by Dr Dean H Watson PhD, Australian Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. For further information, go to: www.WatsonHeadacheApproach.com.
The course was based on the Watson Headache® Approach, a protocol for the skilled assessment and management of the upper cervical (neck) spine in Cervicogenic and Primary Headache, and related conditions in which the underlying dysfunction is sensitisation of the lower brainstem. The Watson Headache® Approach is recognised as a scientifically researched method of examination as well as a comprehensive clinical management system. If your migraines are frequent, if medication manages but does not resolve them, or if your neck is consistently involved before or during an attack, this assessment is the clinical step that changes the pattern.

A structured clinical evaluation of the upper cervical spine to determine whether C1, C2, or C3 are contributing to your headache or migraine pattern. Assessment-first, every time.
Hands-on management of headache originating from cervical structures, using the Watson Headache® Approach to identify and treat the specific segments involved.
Assessment of brainstem sensitisation driven by upper cervical dysfunction, addressing the cervical component that amplifies migraine triggers into full attacks.
Systematic assessment and treatment of the cervical structures commonly involved in chronic tension-type headache, particularly those driven by posture and sustained loading.
Assessment of the cervical contribution to vestibular symptoms including dizziness, imbalance, and motion sensitivity that accompany migraine presentations.
Upper cervical assessment for persistent headache following head injury, where cervical dysfunction often sustains symptoms long after the initial concussion has resolved.
Watson’s Technique is typically delivered as an intensive program of 5 to 6 sessions over three weeks, based on clinical findings and shared decision-making with your practitioner.
Headache assessment and management under TAC, WorkCover, and NDIS funded plans where clinically indicated and funding-approved.
Detailed headache history, cervical movement analysis, neurological screening, and upper cervical palpation to determine whether a cervical driver is present and which segments are involved.
Clear goals, defined session frequency, expected milestones, and an honest picture of what the Watson Headache® Approach can achieve for your specific presentation.
Precise, sustained pressure applied to the identified cervical segments to reduce brainstem sensitisation. Technique, sequence, and pressure are matched exactly to your assessment findings.
Postural guidance, cervical exercise, and practical strategies to maintain treatment gains and reduce the likelihood of recurrence between sessions and beyond the treatment program.
Effective Watson Headache® treatment is built on determining whether the upper cervical spine is genuinely contributing to your headache pattern. At Myofitness, no treatment begins before a thorough assessment of your headache history, cervical movement, and neurological status.
This is not a formality. It determines whether the Watson Headache® Approach is the right intervention for you and, if so, precisely which cervical segments require treatment. Treatment without accurate assessment is guesswork. We do not guess.
Your findings and treatment plan are explained to you in full before anything begins. You will always know what we found, what we are doing, and why. That transparency is part of the standard at every Myofitness clinic.
No two headache presentations are identical. The segments involved, the degree of brainstem sensitisation, and the appropriate treatment sequence all vary, which is why the Watson Headache® Approach requires careful assessment rather than a standard protocol applied to everyone.
At Myofitness, every session begins with a clinical intake before any hands-on work starts. The pressure used in Watson Headache® treatment is precise and specific, applied to clearly identified cervical levels in a defined sequence. Accuracy of application matters far more than force.
Where postural or lifestyle factors are contributing to cervical load, we integrate these into your management plan and provide guidance on how to address them effectively between sessions. The aim is always a client who understands their own headache pattern and has the tools to manage it.
You have tried medication, trigger lists, and lifestyle changes and yet the attacks keep returning. For many people with recurring migraine, an unaddressed dysfunction in the upper neck is part of what is sustaining the cycle. Assessment tells us whether that applies to you.
Head pain that builds through the day, worsens at a desk, or eases when you lie down often has a cervical component. We assess the specific segments involved and treat the source, not just the area of discomfort.
If your headaches require medication to function but return as soon as it wears off, the underlying driver has not been addressed. The Watson Headache® Approach is designed to identify and treat that driver directly, not suppress the symptom.
Stiffness, restricted rotation, or discomfort in the upper neck before, during, or after a headache is a strong indicator of cervical involvement. This is precisely the pattern the Watson Headache® Approach is designed to assess and treat.
Sustained posture loads the upper cervical spine continuously. If your headaches are consistently worse after desk work, driving, or screen time, the cervical spine is likely involved and the pattern is addressable with the right clinical approach.
Long-standing headache and migraine patterns that have persisted despite multiple interventions often have a cervical component that has never been properly assessed. Our practitioner assesses this directly and gives you an honest answer about whether the Watson Headache® Approach applies to your case.

The Watson Headache® Approach is a specialised assessment and treatment method designed for people with persistent headaches, migraines, neck-related headaches, dizziness and some forms of facial pain. It focuses on the upper cervical spine, where dysfunction can contribute to headache symptoms.
Using gentle hands-on assessment and treatment, your clinician identifies whether the joints and muscles in your upper neck are contributing to your headaches. If appropriate, treatment aims to reduce pain, improve neck movement and help decrease the frequency and intensity of headaches.
The Watson Headache® Approach may be suitable if you experience:
* Frequent headaches or migraines
* Neck pain associated with headaches
* Cervicogenic headaches
* Headaches triggered by neck movement or poor posture
* Persistent headaches that haven’t responded to previous treatment
* Certain types of dizziness related to the neck
During your initial consultation, we’ll complete a comprehensive assessment to determine whether your symptoms are likely to respond to this approach. If it’s not the right fit, we’ll discuss other treatment options that may better suit your condition.
Every person is different. Some patients notice improvement within the first few sessions, while others with long-standing headaches may require a longer course of treatment.
Your clinician will regularly reassess your progress and adjust your treatment plan based on your response. Our goal is not just short-term pain relief, but long-term improvement and better headache management.
