What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow also known as Lateral Epicondylitis, is the most common overuse syndrome which originates in the elbow. Tennis elbow refers to inflammation and/or micro tearing in the tendons which join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. This micro tearing of the forearm muscles causes a painful irritation of the tendon at the elbow every time the elbow joint bends and extends.

Who is more likely to develop Tennis Elbow?

Whilst it is called tennis elbow, only 5% of the people suffering from tennis elbow are tennis players. This is because tennis elbow is an overuse injury which gets worse overtime with repetitive actions, regardless of which sport or activity, where the elbow is constantly bending and extending hence its high prevalence in cleaners.

It also affects

  • Golfers
  • Computer workers
  • Baseball players
  • Bowlers
  • Garden and lawn workers
  • Jobs that require regular vacuuming, sweeping, and scrubbing
  • Carpenters and mechanics

What are the symptoms of Tennis Elbow?

  • Pain or burning on the outer part of the elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain at night
  • Pain worsened with forearm activity
  • Constant pain, which prohibits any activity
