Whiplash

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury which occurs in the muscles and ligaments of the neck. It is often caused by a sudden acceleration or deceleration force or movement which forces the neck muscles to extend beyond their normal range of motion. Whiplash is often seen in people who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents.

Symptoms

Symptoms may not be noticed immediately after an accident but may gradually occur. Whiplash is often non-life threatening but it can cause long lasting side effects such as:
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches, specifically at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
Therefore, it’s important to get it assessed to ensure you and your practitioner are aware of the severity of it and the number of structures involved.
